Is fishing better in Key West than Miami?

Florida is undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to fish. The state is home to an abundance of fish species, both inshore and offshore. The South Florida region, in particular, is a favorite spot for anglers from all over the world. It is home to two of the biggest fishing destinations in the state: Miami and Key West.

While both cities offer excellent fishing opportunities, there are some distinct differences between the two that make Key West the superior choice. Here are some reasons why:

Access to better fishing spots

Key West is located at the southernmost point of Florida and the United States. This location means that it is closer to the Gulf Stream than Miami. The Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current that runs along the eastern coast of Florida, bringing with it a variety of pelagic species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, and billfish. These fish species are highly sought after by anglers, and Key West’s proximity to the Gulf Stream makes it easier to catch them.

More diverse fish species

As mentioned above, Key West’s location near the Gulf Stream means that it is home to a wide variety of fish species. The city is known for its excellent offshore fishing, and anglers can catch everything from marlin and sailfish to tuna and wahoo. In addition, Key West also has excellent inshore fishing opportunities, where anglers can catch bonefish, tarpon, and permit. While Miami also offers good offshore and inshore fishing, the range of species is not as diverse as Key West.

Less crowded

Miami is a bustling city with a population of over 450,000 people. Because of the city’s reputation as a travel destination, the fishing areas there might become crowded, especially during the high season. Key West, on the other hand, has a population of only around 25,000 people. The city is smaller and less crowded, making it easier to find less crowded fishing spots.

More laid-back atmosphere

Key West is known for its laid-back, island vibe. The city has a relaxed atmosphere that is perfect for a fishing trip. Miami, on the other hand, is a fast-paced city with a lot of activity. While both cities have their unique charm, Key West’s more laid-back atmosphere is ideal for a more relaxing and enjoyable fishing experience.

While Miami and Key West both offer excellent fishing opportunities, Key West is the superior choice for those looking for a more diverse range of fish species, better access to fishing spots, a less crowded environment, and a more laid-back atmosphere. So, if you are planning a fishing trip to Florida, Key West is the place to be!
